Turkey:
Over 60 Kurdish Politicians Arrested Hours Before Elections
Turkish authorities arrested over 60 Kurdish politicians, including candidates for the pro-Kurdish People’s Democratic Party (HDP), on Saturday in Istanbul and other provinces for unclear reasons, only hours before the elections are kicked off.
The Turkish police conducted an operation in Istanbul where they raided 127 houses and arrested 53 politicians, while 11 others were taken into custody from the province of Sanliurfa as well, Kurdistan 24 cited a statement by the HDP, adding that the arrests were made during the election campaigns. Over 30 HDP members in Adana, Van, and Igdir cities were, in the meantime, reprimanded to jail on « terrorism-related » charges, the report noted.
Turkish Interior Minister Suleyman Soylu had already pointed out that they would target the HDP.
